Sweet Treats of the Bay State: Exploring Massachusetts' Dessert Scene

Massachusetts Dessert

Massachusetts boasts many bakeries, chocolatiers, and specialty shops selling delectable desserts to satisfy every craving imaginable - donuts to pies to pastries - providing plenty of satisfying sweet indulgences that are sure to please.

Boston cream pie (an inverted cake-style pastry dessert) was first made at Parker House Hotel (today the Omni Parker House) in 1855 and soon after became its signature dessert.

Boston Cream Pie

Boston Cream Pie is a delicious classic that defies categorization. Consisting of two layers of sponge cake filled with pastry cream and finished off with an irresistibly rich chocolate glaze, the Boston Cream Pie can also be baked in either a springform pan or flan-style mold for maximum versatility.

Boston is known for its culinary history, and claims that the original Boston Cream Pie was invented at Parker House Hotel by a French chef in 1856. But the history behind this dish remains unclear - perhaps English cream cake served as its inspiration; or more likely due to it having been created here in Boston itself.

No matter its origins, Bostonians love cake-that-is-a-pie - so much so that in 1996 Massachusetts named it its official state dessert!

For those unable to visit Parker's for their slice, there are numerous bakeries around Boston offering Boston Cream Pie as a delicacy. Parker House Restaurant features an indulgent dessert sampler including Boston Cream Pie, peanut butter cupcake, and chocolate mousse cake; other Boston area establishments serving it include The Scoop N Scootery which serves a Boston Cream Pie Sundae featuring vanilla pudding and cake pieces with chocolate ganache and doughy sugar cookie bites; Holy Cow Ice Cream Cafe which offers Boston Cream Pie-inspired vanilla custard base with fudge swirl; Acushnet Creamery provides Boston Cream Pie-inspired chiffon cakes.

Jalal notes that all their toppings and inclusions are produced in house in their Watertown commissary to guarantee quality and consistency; FoMu works closely with suppliers to source local products ethically.

Modern Pastry or Mike's Pastry offer delectable cannoli treats in the North End that should not be missed when visiting Boston. Both shops boast that their cannoli is Boston's best, though locals tend to favor Mike's over Modern Pastry when visiting. Either way, enjoy your treat alongside a steaming cup of coffee or tea and make it part of your visit experience!

Modern Pastry offers not only cannoli, but also other popular Italian sweets like lobster tails and pizzelles. Customers can customize their shell and cream filling by choosing from flavors like strawberry, Nutella, Oreos or Limoncellos - regular as well as Florentine-style shells are offered; additionaly they offer ricotta vanilla custard for those who don't wish to add fruit fillings!

Tatte’s

Tatte Bakery and Cafe has long been a local favorite for brunch, coffee, and sweets. Established by self-trained pastry chef Tzurit Or, who also works as a film producer. Or started the company selling her creations at Boston farmers markets before raising enough capital to open her first brick-and-mortar location in Brookline.

Since opening their first location, Tzurit Or's business has quickly expanded into an established local presence and recently announced their expansion with a second location opening in Washington D.C. She says she created this business out of nostalgia for the simple breakfasts and delicious brunches she enjoyed as a child in Israel.

Tatte chain restaurants specialize in Israeli and Mediterranean food, such as shakshuka and halva pastries, known for its generous portions and fresh ingredients. College students frequently frequent Tatte's locations throughout Boston - one being at Northeastern University's Marino Recreation Center!

Or remains confident in its continued growth despite criticism over how employees are treated; financial assistance from Ron Shaich, founder of Panera Bread and Au Bon Pain has helped it do just that.

Tatte's popularity has skyrocketed, making it hard to secure a seat during peak hours. Lines often stretch out the door and down the block; but their food is certainly worth waiting for!

Tatte's menu offers something for every palate - be it salads, sandwiches or delicious pastries! Open seven days a week with coffee, tea and juice options as well as its signature menu to start off each day right!
