Sampling Craft Beer in Massachusetts' Vibrant Brewery Scene

Massachusetts Craft Beer

Bostonians know what good craft beer tastes like - Sam Adams may be best known, but many local breweries in town offer quality beverages too!

Atlantic Brewing's Blueberry Ale was inspired by an accidental encounter with a blueberry vendor on the street. Today, this brewery uses ingredients like roasted barley and fresh hops from Valley Malt in Hadley for its production process.

Barrel House Z

Barrel House Z is a newly established craft brewery in Weymouth, MA located on Woodrock Road just minutes from Boston. Established by Russ Heissner - first head brewer at Harpoon Brewery - who recruited a team to start this small-scale brewery, which specializes in barrel-aged beers.

This brewery is open to the public and features both a tasting room and taproom for visitors to experience its products first-hand. They sell growlers and crowlers to go, along with offering an ever-rotating selection of beers ranging in abv from 5%-10% such as stouts, porters and amber ales; using different wood species for aging their beers.

Pengtaur, part of BHZ's Mythical Creatures series, is their latest offering. Inspired by mythical creatures like penguins and centaurs, its name pays homage to C.J. Falk's creative mind; working tirelessly on developing an NEIPA that stands out from its peers while featuring just enough haze and fruit flavor to set itself apart from competitors.

BHZ's other new release is Six Summers Lemon Radler, created specifically to be the ideal summer beverage. Packed with lemon and sage flavors with just the slightest hint of hop aromas, this drink will help cool you down after long days at the beach or hiking through parks.

Untold Brewing

Scituate's run-down schoolhouse had long served as nothing more than an empty warehouse housing pet food, hay bales, and fire department hoses - but on October 13, 2017, this space came alive again as Untold Brewing, South Shore's latest brewery and taproom.

Matt Elder is a self-described beer geek with marketing experience who, along with his brother and third partner, decided to open their brewery with the goal of producing clean and high-quality ales. Ironically enough, their grand opening took place on Friday the 13th (referencing one of the seminal 80s horror movies featuring Jason Voorhees from Crystal Lake Camp coming back out to terrorize) which seemed ironic but is an appropriate name for such an enterprise.

Elder and his team plan to launch with seven ales that were refined over the past year, drawing from recipes they developed. He acknowledges their brewing style is heavily West Coast inspired - "we do love our hazy stuff"-but other styles may also feature. Additionally, their commitment to sustainable environmental practices and partnerships with local non-profits have created deep bonds within the community.

The taproom itself occupies the former one-room schoolhouse at 6 Old Country Way, while its 15-barrel operation and fermenters reside in their own building on the property. It offers plenty of comfortable seating as well as a small patio - an ideal spot to grab a beverage after work or spend an afternoon with friends!

At this brewery, guests can order drinks both digitally or at the counter, with packaged beer available for take home purchase. A seasonally inspired menu featuring salads, flatbreads and shared plates featuring organic food from local farms as well as locally-sourced ingredients will also be offered by chef Liz Carr who specializes in creating healthy yet delectable dishes!

Untold's team is immensely proud to call Scituate their home and have fostered deep relationships within the community through collaborations with nonprofits and charitable organizations to raise money and awareness for various causes. Additionally, they've taken full advantage of their restored schoolhouse space by including historical elements in their branding such as Minot's Ledge Light near Scituate/Cohasset in their logo design.

Harpoon Brewery

Harpoon Brewery was established in 1986 as an employee owned brewery. They specialize in beer, brewery products, beverages and alcohol and boast an impressive product lineup of UFO Beer, IPAs and Specialty Selections. Harpoon is based out of Boston MA.

Harpoon began as three friends who enjoyed drinking beer together but were limited in their options in their locality. Inspired by Europe and its extensive brewing and drinking traditions, they decided to open up their own brewery where they could produce beer that met their individual preferences for drinking - inviting friends as co-conspirators in enjoying it with them.

Harpoon India Pale Ale was first released as a summer seasonal in 1993 and has become available year round since. A classic craft beer, it offers floral notes with a medium body and an irresistibly aromatic hop finish for an irresistibly enjoyable craft beer experience on Cape Cod beaches, Vermont ski lodges or Boston dive bars alike. Pair this beer with spicy curries featuring shellfish or peppery cheeses like Monterey/ Pepper Jack/ Gorgonzola/ Limburger dishes for optimal enjoyment!

Boston Beer Works

Massachusetts boasts a vibrant beer scene. Visitors to Massachusetts will find breweries aplenty; you'll likely find one near any corner of the state - Boston alone has some incredible establishments to discover!

Sam Adams and Harpoon are perhaps two of the best-known breweries in Boston, both being instrumental in starting the American craft beer revolution. But there are numerous other breweries in and around Boston; some specialize in sour or IPA beers while others serve delicious food; there are also various pubs offering an impressive variety of craft beers; some even boast outdoor beer gardens in summer!

Trillium Brewery in Fenway offers another fantastic choice. Boasting an inviting tasting room and offering an impressive variety of craft beers that span from hoppy and sour options to vegetarian-friendly varieties, Trillium is an outstanding brewery to check out in Boston.

Democracy Brewing, located just blocks away from Boston Common, offers great brewpub experience with full service kitchen, frequent live music performances, light and dark beers as well as pizza and sandwiches served to their customers.

Night Shift Brewing offers another local option with locations throughout the city. Their beers are produced using hops and malt grown in Pennsylvania - perfect for anyone seeking something distinctive while staying close to home!

Boston also boasts numerous other breweries, such as Boston Beer Works. Established in 1992 and currently the largest brewing company in America, they were recently purchased by a private equity firm who are looking to expand production facilities while opening a restaurant/taproom within their facility for guests to visit and socialize.
