The Massachusetts Institute of Technology's 168-acre campus is situated along the western bank of Charles River in Cambridge, Massachusetts and derives its name from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Act signed by Governor Frederick Winthrop in 1860, which established an institute of technology. This act also established one of the first colleges of science and technology in America.
Today, MIT stands as one of the premier international centres for scientific and technical research, producing leaders across virtually every discipline of science and technology. Students can make free calls using on-campus phones to a limited number of off-campus locations such as Draper Laboratory (a spinoff military research lab), Harvard University, and Mount Auburn Hospital.
The MBTA (Boston's public transit authority) offers the simplest route to MIT from Logan Airport: take the subway line directly from there to South Station and transfer onto Red Line; ride towards Alewife or take a taxi ride instead. Kendall Square houses much of MIT's campus.
MIT’s Schools
MIT comprises five schools, each offering multiple degrees and specializing in specific fields: Architecture and Planning School; School of Engineering; Humanities Arts, and Social Sciences School; Sloan School of Management School; and Science. For the first year students explore academic interests without declaring an area of study until second term grades come out; during which learning communities, dedicated advising services, small cohorts as well as grants are used to aid exploration. MIT requires applicants with outstanding grades and SAT or ACT scores in order to be admitted, with superscored SAT results taken into consideration by its admissions committee. Furthermore, two SAT Subject Tests must also be submitted: one must be Math I or II while another may include Biology, Chemistry or Physics - these subjects should also be pursued actively throughout high school along with extracurricular activities that interest you.
MIT is highly selective, with an acceptance rate that has hovered near single digits for several years. Because this school does not offer rolling admissions, students should apply early. Furthermore, students should carefully review the application form and all of its short essay questions; make sure all answers are grammar and spelling error-free while staying within word limit limits; have someone such as a teacher or college admissions counselor review it before submitting your application for consideration.
